Electrical appliances and chargers (including cancer cell phone chargers) left plugged in drain electricity like there’s no tomorrow - even when they’re not in use! Yes, even appliances that are switched off can draw power from the grid (it’s called phantom load).

For example, a TV set that’s switched on for 3 hours a day (the average time Europeans spend watching TV) and in standby mode during the remaining 21 hours uses about 40% of its energy in standby mode. This was an eyeopener. I did not know that the wastage was that high. I knew that there would be wastages but never knew the magnitude of the wastages. Thanks for this info. I am still a bit sceptical about the 40% though :)

Anoop, I know it might sound crazy or unreasonable, so I am adding here a quote from the New York Times which confirms it… Believe me, I was as shocked as you are…

“Indeed, the Department of Energy estimates that in the average home, 40 percent of all electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off. Add that all up, and it equals the annual output of 17 power plants, the government says.”

Bottom line, people: it IS as crazy as it SOUNDS!
